G Kesava Rao, chief engineer of Central Electricity Authority (CEA), has said with the execution of various projects by the end of the 11th Plan, the Loktak Downstream power plans are expected to generate about 500 MW of electric power as against the present generation of 200 MW.
Speaking at a programme of awareness campaign on energy conservation and power reforms, organized by the NHPC, at the Hotel Excellency today, Kesava Rao said Manipur has potentials, for sufficient electric power generation which are yet to be exploited.
He said the per capita consumption of power in Manipur ranges from 150 to 160 units against the 360 unit of national consumption.
Elaborating on the theme of the campaign, �Mission 2012-Power for All�, Rao said the CEA has launched the nationwide campaign for power exploitation of power resources of every region.
The electric power being one of the most important basic infrastructures for the modern world, improvement of the present power production is imperative, utility and distribution system in every region, he said.
He also said national target has been set for achieving electrification of 62,000 villages by 2007 and 18,000 remote villages by 2012 and increasing inter-regional transmission capacity from 4800 MW to 30,000 MW.
Milestone of the Mission 2012: Power for All� includes complete electrification of all regions which require an investment of Rs 800,000 crore.
